![]() ![]() The points aren’t that close together, nor are they that far apart so this pattern isn’t really weak or strong. That is, as the number of books increases, the weight of the shipment also increases. That means that there is a positive association between the number of books in each shipment and the weight. (b) Describe the association between the two variables. Here, the predictor is the number of books and the response is the weight of the shipment. The predictor is always plotted along the horizontal axis and the response along the vertical. Remember that when using a scatterplot, the idea is to understand how the response responds to changes in the predictor. How many books were in this shipment? (a) What has Caitlyn used as the predictor? What about the response? (d) One of the shipments weight a little less than 7 pounds. (c) What was the heaviest shipment Caitlyn made? (a) What has Caitlyn used as the predictor? What about the response? Use this scatterplot to answer the following questions. She plotted the data in the scatterplot below. In order to better predict her costs, she has been collecting data on the number of books in each shipment she has sent and the weight of the shipment. ExampleĬaitlyn has started a business selling textbooks and novels online. For scatterplots with linear patterns, the correlation coefficient can be used to better understand this strength. It can be somewhat subjective to compare the strength of one association to another. This is true whether the pattern is linear, nonlinear, positive, or negative. The strength of the relationship or association between two variables is shown by how close the points are to each other. This is seen as a linear pattern that falls from left to right. In a negative pattern, as the predictor increases, the value of the response decreases. This shows up in the scatterplot as a linear pattern that rises from left to right. In a positive pattern, as the value of the predictor increases, so does the value of the response. ![]() If there is no clear pattern, then it means there is no clear association or relationship between the variables that we are studying.Īs you can see above, linear patterns can be thought of as either positive or negative. Whatever the pattern is, we use this to describe the association between the variables. ![]() Scatterplots with a linear pattern have points that seem to generally fall along a line while nonlinear patterns seem to follow along some curve. In general, you can categorize the pattern in a scatterplot as either linear or nonlinear. Each point represents the value of the response for a given value of the predictor. Using this terminology, a scatterplot is used to understand how the response responds to changes in the predictor. Given a scatterplot, the variable on the horizontal axis is the predictor (or independent variable) and the variable on the vertical axis is the response (or dependent variable). Questions like “When the temperature increases, do gas prices also increase?” or “How are changes in the price of gas related to the number of miles people drive each month?” can be answered by studying the pattern in a scatterplot. ![]() Scatterplots are used to understand the relationship or association between two variables. ![]()

![]() ![]() He tries to put his foot down but when he sees them in the box all squished together he’s suddenly all ‘it would be nice to have a dog around. I wouldn’t doubt it if he had a couple of dogs growing up. Sniper has always had a weakness for animals, especially dogs.If the dog is around long enough, he may just get a little bit attached. Has probably had very little experience with dogs so Medic’s indifferent for the most part but thinks it would be good to have something to keep his S/O safe while he’s not around. Like Spy, he knows they can’t really bring dogs into the base, especially his lab, but will let them keep a single dog if they live away from him. Wouldn’t put it past him to want to experiment on dogs, but they are puppies and they’re so small and he knows his S/O would be pissed if he even suggested it, so he lets that thought slide. One of those guys who keeps saying they’re not a big fan of little dogs but catch him curled up on the couch with one of the puppies he let his S/O keep while he’s off of work. Will stand his ground on letting Teufort’s animal shelter care for them if his S/O is working with him, but would be more lenient if his partner stayed home and didn’t have a job that took up most of their time. You know he probably had a golden retriever or german shepherd or some other typical farm dog growing up, so he’d been a little enamored with the puppies but will refuse off the bat to keep them in the base for more than a few days.Promises his S/O they’ll at least have a few dogs when the Administrator lets them go. After the puppies are well cared for and strong enough to be fully independent, he ends up letting his S/O deal with the foster placements since he would probably wind up getting too attached. Would ideally like two or three dogs when his contract ends, but doesn’t want to burden his mother or sisters by giving them a litter of dogs to raise and train. Also has never had a dog probably but definitely likes them and the idea of a few around the house to keep his family safe, especially if they’re big ol’ strong dogs like the caucasian ovcharka.Definitely teaches them to come on command by saying ‘release the hounds.’ His S/O’s house will be so protected when those dogs are fully grown though, anyone that tries to break in is in for a big surprise. Though he’d probably have to send them back home with his mum for the time being since he knows the other mercs and Pauling probably wouldn’t be too pleased with 6-10 puppies running around the bases. Now he gets to finally live out his fantasy of that army of dogs he always wanted, especially if it’s a big breed of dog. I like to think Demoman is that kid who has always desperately wanted a dog but never got one. They would likely be able to hide the dogs much longer than Scout with the help of their S/O until Pyro accidentally drops a squeaky toy they were sneaking into the base for them and a small army of fully grown dogs bust out of their room. Unlike Scout, Pyro is probably just going to immediately tear up and cry over all these teensy squirming little babies and is going to keep sobbing for the next hour as they try to hold all of the dogs at once. The puppies are sent to a shelter with Engie and Sol and Jane spends the entire process sending off his comrades with manly tears in his eyes and yelling the American anthem for them outside the shelter. ![]() Bites almost rips an ear off of Private Foxtrot and Engineer has to intervene. He is so on board with keeping every single one of these dogs and he is totally not crying what the hell are you talking about man, it’s just his allergies acting up. Her husband supported her big dream, but did not do much to directly influence the student’s lives. Ms Gruwell was actually the only one who saw something in the student. ![]() She did not let Ms Campbell interfere with her views, personality and her way of teaching. She does not allow Ms Gruwell to give them new books, fearful that they would destroy and confident that the students can’t read them anyway. This technique has helped me understand that costumes acts as means of creating personality and not changing during the course of the film An example of her true personality and how Ms Gruwell was not influenced by her surroundings is that Ms Gruwell does not act like other teachers such as Ms Campbell. She wore a red blazer, red blouse and knee highed skirt. She carefully chose her outfit for the first day confidently, adding a string of pearls her department head advised her not to wear to school. An example of this is on the first day of school for Ms Gruwell. Costumes Designer, Marisa Aboitiz has made the use of formal costumes for the character of Mrs Gruwell played by Hilary Swank in the film of “Freedom Writers” to emphasize an ideal teacher’s quality and moreover to project a professional image. A film technique that helped me understand her determination to help students succeed was costumes. However Ms Gruwell went beyond her comfort zone to provide students with resources. ![]() She worked tirelessly to fund for textbooks for her students. The rest of the administration had given up on these kids, withholding supplies and keeping expectations low. Her first job was selling lingerie in a Department Store while her second job was a hotel concierge in Marriot Hotel. Another important characteristic demonstrated by Ms Gruwell is her determination to help students succeed.Īn example of this is when she decided to work two part time jobs. Her constant energy and enthusiasm inspired her students and the viewers to strive for excellence and take advantage of the opportunities presented. Also, it helped me to understand the realm of problems and differences this community in Long Beach was experiencing.Īll the above techniques have helped me understand that despite all the problem there were in the school, Ms Gruwell tried to remain as enthusiastic towards the students.Although the class was difficult to teach she did not give up. The long shots helped me to understand the struggles and hardships that each of the students were facing in their communities. In an integrated school in California, all minority groups were represented. The close-up focused angles on Erin Gruwell brought out this realization at many key points in the film.Įxtreme long shots of the group of students helped us understand the diversity and difference the classroom was experiencing. An example of this shot was the smile on Ms Gruwell’s face fading away and she looked very miserable. Then, the shot cuts away from the main scene to show the reaction of Ms Gruwell. An example of the camera work was the mid-shot of Ms Gruwell’s waist up which showed how pleased she was with the achievement of the students when she looked at the trophy cabinet. However, her enthusiasm quickly diminished when she witnessed the students talking to each other and that the class was divided into racial groups as soon as they entered the classroom. The camera was always close to Ms Gruwell and it followed her right throughout the initial stages in the school. An example of the tracking shot is on her first day of teaching. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now you can bring the snowy forest home this holiday season, no matter where you are.
